Fallout 76 Isn’t The Future For Bethesda

There’s been a lot of news about Fallout 76 in the past few days. Most recently, Bethesda has announced that the game’s direction won’t be the future for the developer. Specifically, he was talking about how the game will be games as a service. Todd Howard has said that, while it works for 76, it might not work for other games they work on.

Games As A Service

Speaking to gamesindustry.biz, Mr. Howard said that the game will be similar to Elder Scrolls Online in its approach. However, this kind of approach won’t work for other games. According to Mr. Howard, the approach to the game depends on the game itself. In the interview, Mr. Howard said:

“It doesn’t mark the future. Corporately we’ve done a mix – people forget that sometimes. Elder Scrolls Online is one of the biggest fan online games in the world, we have Fallout Shelter which we keep updating, and Elder Scrolls: Legends. Anyone who has ever said ‘this is the future and this part of gaming is dead’ has been proven wrong every single time. For a long time, we wanted to try a multiplayer game and we had this idea. We shouldn’t be afraid. We should try it.”

That being said, Bethesda has said that it will be taking a number of approaches to different games. As we’ve mentioned already, the developer has said that it comes down to the individual game. This is most visible in the differences between Fallout 4 and Fallout 76. While one focuses on a massive, non-linear story, the other focuses on multiplayer, PvP action. However, according to Mr. Howard, the game won’t be fully PvP, although he didn’t elaborate on exactly what he meant by that.

Fallout 76 will be released later this year. So far, it looks like it’ll be the most out there Fallout game yet.
