Slipgate Studio’s side-scrolling platformer Rad Rodgers was released February 21 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This game follows Rad, a young boy who gets sucked into an old game console and must make his way through a retro-inspired adventure.

Rad Rodgers’ gameplay takes much inspiration from the likes of Jazz Jackrabbit, Mega Man, and other such platform games from the 1990s. Joining Rad in his run-‘n-gun adventure is Dusty, a sentient SNES-styled game console that attaches to his back in a manner similar to Flood in Super Mario Sunshine. Dusty equips Rad with a variety of projectile weapons, with more that can be obtained and used throughout the game.

While many throwback platformers would try to go for a pixel art style, Rad Rodgers is done in a modern polygonal 3D style, creating a 2.5D aesthetic for the platforming stages. This title’s presentation also takes cues from the likes of Conker’s Bad Fur Day, as it’s not afraid to include bits of adult-oriented humor. This ranges from Dusty having a penchant for spewing profanities to side characters such as a sassy wood-pipe smoking oak tree.

Despite having only recently been released on consoles, Rad Rodgers was released on Steam back in 2016. It was created by Danish developer Slipgate Studios and published by THQ Nordic. This new release contains five additional levels, along with some balancing fixes. These additions will be available to owners of the PC version through a free update.
