Today, 2k and Turtle Rock Studios have released their long-awaited 4v1 shooter, Evolve. Hunters will team up in groups of four as they work together to take down the single-player controlled Monster. After many delays, alphas, and betas, the cooperative and competitive experience is now officially in gamer’s hands. As of this writing the game is sitting pretty on Metacritic with a not-too shabby score of 83. During its development cycle, Evolve won over 60 awards and is currently the only game to win “Game of Show” at both E3 and Gamescom, in the same year.
“2K and Turtle Rock Studios did a remarkable job delivering such a creative and ambitious game,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “Evolve is an innovative and highly replayable experience that will define this console generation for years to come.”
Many questioned whether Evolve would be worthy of the $60 price tag as it is a predominantly online experience (offline does exist with the help of AI). You be the judge as the game to date features 3 playable Monsters, 12 Hunters, 4 hunter classes, 4 game modes and 16 maps. The teams at 2K and Turtle Rock are boasting about their Evacuation mode which incorporates the aforementioned features into “a single dynamic campaign offering near-limitless variety”. In this mode, players choose a side and then battle it out over a series of five matches. Supposedly, the outcome of each match will have a direct impact on the following match, providing gamers with “over 800,000 possible gameplay combinations for ultimate replayability.”
“Our philosophy is to build incredibly fun game experiences that we can’t find anywhere else, and we’ve achieved that with Evolve,” said Chris Ashton, co-founder and design director at Turtle Rock Studios. “After years of iteration and playing the game every day, Evolve is a polished and balanced experience for players to enjoy online, cooperatively with friends against AI, or completely alone offline.”
Evolve is out now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One at a cost of $59.99.
