It’s the Easter long weekend, and you have time to spend on gaming. Let’s get cracking with three egg-cellent games/levels with an egg theme.

Good Egg Galaxy – Super Mario Galaxy

Good Egg Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo)

The first level of the Super Mario Galaxy, and personally my favorite in the entire series, is Good Egg Galaxy. This level had everything right in a platformer. Beautiful art, the sense of wonder from hopping from one planet to the other, solid platforming, a thrilling boss fight at the end, and a superb orchestration by Koji Kondo and Mahito Yokota to accompany it all. If you have never played Super Mario Galaxy, pick it up for this well-crafted level among many incredible creative others. I’ve never played Super Mario Galaxy 2, but this is the last time Nintendo really wowed me with the Mario series before jumping into 2D once more, and grounding it back to the traditional numbered leveling system of progression. Super Mario Galaxy is now on the Wii U eShop, and can still be found new in retail stores.

Spyro: Year of the Dragon

<amp-youtube layout="responsive" width="500" height="281" data-videoid="dcMar1C4CmA" title="Spyro: Year of the Dragon - Trailer - 2000"></amp-youtube>

Ah Spyro, how I miss the time before you became just a side character in Skylanders or was voice acted by Elijah Wood. Spyro’s last game by Insomniac Games is Spyro: Year of the Dragon for the original PlayStation, and it’s the only game I’ve played in the series. In this installment, Spyro is tasked with freeing 150 stolen eggs from the clutches of a sorceress, and with each egg freed, a baby dragon appears with a new name and quirk. The world and the characters within the game had tons of personality and color. Through platforming, and some fun mini-games, such as skateboarding, chasing, and flying levels (as well as playing as other characters from the series), Spyro: Year of the Dragon has you completing all kinds of tasks to find the eggs. Spyro: Year of the Dragon is on the PlayStation Store as a PS1 Classic.

Pokémon

The character is having an egg-citing time exploring in Pokemon X/Y (Nintendo)

The first Pokémon game that established egg breeding was Pokémon Gold/Silver, and the series as a whole has quite a few egg-related creatures, including Exeggcute, Togepi, Chansey. The main mechanic is centered around raising specific Pokémon at the daycare center, and have the two Pokémon come together to create an egg. The daycare center is typically used for leveling up Pokémon as well while you are away, or have no room in your party.

Overall, the game is incredibly simple to pick up, but hard to master. You have four moves, which can be in multiple elements of the world. Water beats fire and ground, fire beats grass and ice, and lightning beats flying types. There are also ways of effecting an opposing Pokémon’s ability to fight, including freezing them on the spot, paralyzing through shock, and poisoning. Add this to a vibrant world with a simplistic story and the collecting nature of finding creatures and capturing them, and you have Pokémon in a nutshell. If you have never played a Pokémon game, I would recommend trying at least one. Pokémon Gold would be my recommendation, as it was my first experience with the series (at a young age), and even though it’s considered a kids game, there is something addicting to the formula of finding and catching Pokémon and the overall world is charming.

Do you find anything on this list scrambled or do you think we chose some egg-citing games to try out this Easter? Can you think of any more egg games? Let us know in the comments below!
