8 Exciting Online Games Set in Classical Antiquity

Some of the best games ever made have been set in the period of Antiquity. Trying to pick out the best ones has been a difficult task, as there have been so many great online games set during this period in history. But fear not, we are a persistent bunch here at BagoGames and have managed to bring together 8 of the top online games set in ancient times, otherwise known as the classical Antiquity period.

God of War Series

The God of War series of video games follows Kratos, the demigod son of Zeus and a mortal woman. The first game in the series was released back in 2005 and there are now a total of eight God of War games with the 2018 God of War widely regarded as one of the best video games ever made. The 2018 release was also the first game in the series to deviate from Greek mythology, instead, this instalment was inspired by Norse mythology. God of War won numerous awards from various outlets including the 2018 Game of the Year.

A sequel, God of War Ragnarök is set for release in 2022 on both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. We cannot wait for this release!

Age of Empires: Rise of Rome

Back to the 1990s now for the first ever expansion to the all-time classic Age of Empires series of computer games. The Rise of Rome was the first ever expansion in the series, and boy was it a good one. The Rise of Rome meant a campaign which revolved around Julius Caesar. The expansion also added four new playable civilisations to the game. The basic premise of the series allows the player to act as the leader of an ancient civilisation. The aim is to lead your civilisation through four ages (the Stone, Tool, Bronze and Iron ages). As you advance, you get access to advanced units and technologies.

In regular games, players begin with a town centre and three villagers, the aim is to advance through the ages whilst building an army powerful and strong enough to vanquish your enemies. The AI was ahead of its time and the campaigns were fun and varied greatly from the aforementioned Julius Caesar’s conquest of Rome up to Hannibal and his elephants crossing the Alps.

Here’s a BagoGames top tip, the Age of Empires soundtrack is extremely relaxing and is fantastic to listen to when you are writing!

High Paying Slots

Overlooked by many, high paying slots are among the most played online games over the past several years. There are hundreds of types of slot games, but we thought we would talk you through two of the most popular, Rome: The Golden Age and Medusa Megaways.

Rome: The Golden Age is set during the Roman times and is popular due in part to its Antiquity theme. Medusa Megaways takes the player into the realm of Greek Myth and is inspired by the monstrous Greek Gorgon, Medusa. In both online games, players must spin the reels to land the paying symbols. Symbols include numerous images of ancient Rome and Greece as well as Roman helmets and ancient artifacts.

These slots set during antiquity are regarded as some of the highest paying slot games. Numerous online casinos and slot sites allow their players to play both Rome: The Golden Age and Medusa Megaways.

Civilisation VI

One of the best turn based online strategy games, the Civilisation series peaked with the launch of Civilisation VI. Similar to Age of Empires, players must manage a civilisation of their choice and guide them from ancient times through Antiquity all the way to the present and future. Players must develop their civilisation through technology, culture and government structure whilst exploring the randomly generated world and encountering other civilisations as well as Barbarians. You will have the choice of trading with and peacefully managing relations with other civilisations. Alternatively, you can commit to all-out war using military force.

No two games are alike in Civilisation VI, and the different civilisations you can play as are vast. For the very best experience, we recommend playing online with friends. Although it takes a little time to get into the game and find one another on the map, it is exciting once you begin trading and going to war with your friends’ civilisations. Expect to be stabbed in the back by your best friend, though!

Ryse: Son of Rome

The main launch title for the Xbox One, Ryse: Son of Rome is a fun and immersive action-adventure game which follows a Roman generals struggle through brutality and heroism. Players assume the role of Marius Titus and although the game is basic, it is a lot of fun.

Our favourite feature is the cooperative multiplayer mode, which sees players face waves of enemies in ever changing and dynamic maps. If you love games based around the might of the Roman empire and you enjoy hacking and slashing, then you will love this ancient Antiquity game, Ryse: Son of Rome. However, some controversy surrounded the game. An investigation uncovered that Microsoft Studios had paid for fake reviews and asked writers not to portray the Xbox One or any of its launch titles in a negative manner. Price quotes for these negative reviews ranged from $15,000 to $30,000.

Despite the controversy, we still quite liked Ryse: Son of Rome and we can assure you that we received no bribes from Microsoft or any other company involved with the game.

Imperator: Rome

An extremely difficult Antiquity themed game to master, but extremely rewarding, Imperator: Rome is the successor to the well-known Europa Universalis: Rome series. If you want to play a game that takes you deep into the timeline of the Roman Empire from its beginnings all the way to the end, then this is the game for you. A grand strategy wargame developed by Paradox Interactive, Imperator: Rome takes a lot of time and practice due to the game complex and in-depth gameplay.

Like most strategy games of this type, the real fun can be found when playing online with friends. Although the AI is super intelligent, nothing can beat trying to out-diplomat a human player.

Hegemony Gold: Wars of Ancient Greece

A real time strategy game released over 10 years ago, Hegemony Gold: Wars of Ancient Greece revolves around the campaign of Phillip II of Macedon. The focus is on the military campaigns of the great Greek King, so if you are into the logistics and planning of military campaigns during the Antiquity era, this is the game for you to play.

Admittedly, the graphics are not great, and many critics were keen to let potential players know about this. However, from a purely strategy game point of view, Hegemony Gold: Wars of Ancient Greece is a good one.

Assassin’s Creed Series

No guide to the best games set during Antiquity would be complete without mentioning the Assassin’s Creed series. You can even purchase the Assassin’s Creed Antiquity pack online. The bundle contains both Assassin’s Creed Origins and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. These are our favourite games in the series because we believe they are set during the best times.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is set in the years 431-422 BC and features a history of the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta. You play as a Greek mercenary who is a direct descendant of the Spartan King Leonidas I (the same guy from the 300 film). In truth, you won’t find a better game themed around ancient Antiquity.
