Coca-Cola’s answer to Mountain Dew has returned to store shelves. Today, the East Coast received the first shipment of the highly caffeinated citrus soda, Surge. The Surge movement has finally been successful in their quest to have Surge return to store shelves after a twelve year hiatus. Surge was originally produced from 1996 to 2003, during the golden age of gaming. This is great news for those who are immune to Mountain Dew’s amount of caffeine.
The Surge Movement was founded by three people: Evan Carr, Sean Sheridan, and Matt Winans. They began a huge social media campaign to resurrect Surge, and even purchased a huge billboard by Coca-Cola headquarters to kick everything off. In 2014, Coca Cola partnered with Amazon to sell Surge via their website. Obviously, all of the money that came in got Coca-Cola to realize that there was still money to be made in Surge. Coca-Cola is forging traditional marketing when it comes to Surge this time around; they want the excitement to grow via social media as the campaign previously had.
Right now, Surge is only available on the East Coast. Hopefully some with trickle to the West Coast soon so that I can play Shenmue and drink my Surge!
