Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem Coming to Mobile

Nintendo has had a huge hit on their hands with their first mobile app, Miitomo, which has garnered 10 million users to date. While Miitomo has a very casual appeal, Nintendo is soon to release two new games based on popular franchises to the mobile world. Nintendo announced today that games based on Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing are on their way, and these games will give experiences closer to traditional gaming experiences than the casual accessibility of something like Miitomo.

According to a press release from Nintendo, the Fire Emblem game will be made more accessible than the traditional games in the series on Nintendo’s consoles, however “Nintendo aims to offer the great value of a role-playing strategy game“. It will be interesting to see how this translates into a more approachable game based on how hardcore the Fire Emblem games can be. Fire Emblem seems ideal though based on simple movement of units via touchscreen, comparable to how they have been played on the DS family of systems.

The Animal Crossing game is being designed so that it will be used in conjunction with the Animal Crossing games on “dedicated gaming systems“. This is pretty interesting as we have the more recently released Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer which has been a hit for Nintendo, but one wonders if there will be a game coming for the NX next year as well. Both games are slated to be released in the fall, as well per the press release, Nintendo noted that both of these are “pure game releases” and will be more in line with traditional gaming experiences than Miitomo.

While the news that Zelda for Wii U has been delayed to launch alongside the NX in the spring of next year was a bit of a downer, it will be interesting to see where mobile continues to take Nintendo.
