The Animal Crossing series creator Katsuya Eguchi stated at GDC 2014 that the adorable Animal Crossing: New Leaf 3DS game from Nintendo has sold 7.38 million copies worldwide. In addition to the quaint small-town life simulator New Leaf, the 3DS console has 42.74 million units sold.
The mystery of why Animal Crossing: New Leaf is such a success has been solved. Katsuya Eguchi the producer of Animal Crossing said at GDC, “…we wanted to ensure it would be something that men and women of all ages would have fun playing”. Aya Kyogoku, a female game designer from the Nintendo EAD group (who works on the Zelda, Animal Crossing and Super Mario games) and the New Leaf project leader said diversity of men and women from various ages and backgrounds was the key to making New Leaf reach a varied audience.
