Anime and Manga News This Week (05/03- 05/09)

It’s a new week and a new set of anime and manga news to cover, so I’ll be listing the best updates and announcements we received throughout the week.

Misaki no Mayoiga Film Premiere Date

Earlier this week, the official website for the anime film adaptation of Sachiko Kashiwaba’s Misaki no Mayoiga (The Abandoned House by the Cape) light novel revealed a new trailer, additional staff and cast, and August 27 premiere date.

Kadokawa To Produce 40 Plus Anime Starting Next Year

Earlier this week, Crunchyroll announced through Kadokawa’s official financial reports that the conglomerate aims to increase its production of anime from 33 titles in 2020 to over 40 titles per year. This expansion aligns with growing global demand for diverse streaming content, where audiences are also drawn to interactive entertainment spaces like a casino online, which offers unique, immersive experiences similar to the digital engagement anime fans seek.

Arcane Animated Series Announced

Earlier this week, Netflix and Riot games announced Arcane, a new animated series based on the popular MOBA series League of Legends. The series will be produced by Riot Games and Fortiche Productions.

Netflix describes Arcane as:

Set in the utopian region of Piltover and the oppressed underground of Zaun, the story follows the origins of two iconic League champions-and the power that will tear them apart.

Made in Abyss Season 2 and Game Announced

This week, the official website for the anime adaptation of Akihito Tsukushi’s Made in Abyss manga revealed that the anime will receive a second season titled Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ōgonkyō (Made in Abyss: The Sun Blazes Upon the Golden City) sometime in 2022. Additionally, it was also announced that Spike Chunsoft is also developing a new action RPG for the franchise, titled Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness (Made in Abyss: Yami o Mezashita Rensei).

Anime News Network describes the series as:

In the story, an enormous pit and cave system called the “Abyss” is the only unexplored place in the world. Strange and wonderful creatures reside in its depths, and it is full of precious relics that current humans are unable to make. The mysteries of the Abyss fascinate humans, and they head down to explore. The adventurers who venture into pit are known as “Cave Raiders.” A little orphan girl named Rico lives in the town of Ōrth on the edge of the Abyss. Her dream is to become a Cave Raider like her mother and solve the mysteries of the cave system. One day, Rico starts exploring the caves and discovers a robot who resembles a human boy.

 

Spriggan New Visual and Staff

Earlier this week, ANN and the official website for the upcoming anime adaptation of Hiroshi Takashige and Ryōji Minagawa’s Spriggan (Striker) manga and ANN revealed a new visual and additional staff members for the anime. The anime will stream exclusively on Netflix worldwide.

Anime News Network describes the story as:

The manga’s story centers on Yū Ominae, a high school student who is also a Spriggan, an agent charged by the ARCAM Corporation to protect the ancient relics of an advanced older civilization from falling into the hands of states and entities who wish to misuse them.

Fifth and Sixth Hori-san to Miyamura-Kun OVA Episodes Detailed

This week, it was announced that the long awaited fifth and sixth Hori-san to Miyamura-Kun OVA episodes will release on May 25 in Japan. Both episodes will include a normal and special edition. The special editions will have a slip case and special manga drawn by the manga’s author HERO. Additionally, the fifth episode will be 22 minutes in length, while the sixth episode will be 26 minutes in length.

Battle in 5 Seconds After Meeting Premiere Date

The official website for the upcoming anime adaptation of Saizo Harawata and Miyakokasiwa’s Deatte 5-byo de Battle (Battle in 5 Seconds After Meeting) manga revealed a new promotional video, key visual, staff and cast listing, theme song artists, and July 12 premiere date.

Kaguya-sama: Love is War OVA Premiere Date and PV

The official Twitter account for the anime adaptation of Aka Akasaka’s Kaguya-sama: Love is War (Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunōsen) manga posted a new promotional video for the anime’s upcoming OVA. The OVA is set to release on May 19.

The disc includes three episodes named “Kaguya-sama Darkness volume 1,” “Kaguya-sama Darkness volume 2,” and “Kaguya-sama wa Tabesasetai” (“Kaguya-sama wants to eat”). Additionally, the OVA DVD will be bundled with a limited edition of the manga’s 22nd volume.

Funimation describes the series as:

Known for being both brilliant and powerful, Miyuki Shirogane and Kaguya Shinomiya lead the illustrious Shuchiin Academy as near equals. And everyone thinks they’d make a great couple. Pride and arrogance are in ample supply, so the only logical move is to trick the other into instigating a date! Who will come out on top in this psychological war where the first move is the only one that matters?

Golden Kamuy Manga Ends Soon

Earlier this week, the official Twitter account for Shueisha’s Young Jump magazine and ANN announced that Satoru Noda’s Golden Kamuy manga is nearing its end as its 277th chapter released on Thursday. The manga launched in Shueisha’s Young Jump magazine in 2014. It’s 25th volume shipped on March 18. The manga received an anime adaptation in April 2018, and currently has three seasons.

Viz Media releases the manga in English, and describes the story as:

In the early twentieth century, Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi “Immortal” Sugimoto scratches out a meager existence during the postwar gold rush in the wilderness of Hokkaido. When he stumbles across a map to a fortune in hidden Ainu gold, he sets off on a treacherous quest to find it. But Sugimoto is not the only interested party, and everyone who knows about the gold will kill to possess it! Faced with the harsh conditions of the northern wilderness, ruthless criminals and rogue Japanese soldiers, Sugimoto will need all his skills and luck—and the help of an Ainu girl named Asirpa—to survive.

Overlord Season 4 & New Anime Film Announced

The official Twitter account for the anime adaptation of Kugane Maruyama’s Overlord light novel series announced that its anime adaptation will receive a fourth season and an all-new anime film to cover the “Sei Ōkoku-hen” Arc (Holy Kingdom Arc). The announcement was first made during a special live streaming marathon of the Overlord TV anime series. Original novel illustrator so-bin also drew a special illustration to celebrate the announcement.

Yen Press publishes the novels in English and describes the story as:

For twelve years, the virtual world of Yggdrasil has served as the playground and battlefield for the skeletal lord Momonga and his guild of fellow monsters, Ainz Ooal Gown. But the guild’s glory days are over, and the game is shutting down permanently. New Dragon Ball Super Anime Film Announced

Toei Animation announced today that a second anime film for the Dragon Ball Super franchise is currently in development. Planning for the new film began in 2018. Original creator Akira Toriyama is in charge of the screenplay and character design.

Toriyama commented on the announcement saying:

An all new movie since “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” is currently in the making!

Just like the previous movie, I’m heavily leading the story and dialogue production for another amazing film.

I really shouldn’t talk too much about the plot yet, but be prepared for some extreme and entertaining bouts, which may feature an unexpected character.

We’ll be charting through some unexplored territory in terms of the visual aesthetics to give the audience an amazing ride, so I hope everybody will look forward to the new movie!
