Anime and Manga News This Week (05/24-05/30)

It’s a new week and a new set of anime and manga news to cover, so I’ll be listing the best updates and announcements we received throughout the week.

Record of Ragnarok Debuts on June 17

Earlier this week, Warner Bros. Japan announced that the anime adaptation of Record of Ragnarok will begin streaming worldwide on Netflix June 17. A new key visual, additional cast members, and preview trailer was also revealed for the anime.

Lupin the Third: Part VI Announced

A new official website was made to announce Lupin the Third: Part VI, the new anime series based on the Lupin III franchise, and to commemorate the franchise’s 50th anniversary. The anime is set to air sometime in October. A teaser visual and promotional video for the anime were also revealed.

Crunchyroll streamed Part 5 as it aired and describes the story as:

Lupin’s current target: a key to a certain server facility. Once obtained, the information of all the customers and their funds from the world’s largest online bank will be in Lupin’s hands. There, they find the developer of the security system of the bank: Ami. Lupin and Jigen successfully capture Ami and bring her to their hideout. However, almost immediately upon their arrival, Zenigata and his men surround the place. Being at a loss as to why their location was exposed so easily, they discover an online show going viral. The show’s name: “Arrest Lupin III.

Given OVA Announced

The official website for the anime adaptation Natsuki Kizu’s Given manga via ANN announced that the series will receive a new OVA titled Given: Uragawa no Sonzai (Given: The One on the Flip-Side), as well as a live-action adaptation.

Crunchyroll streamed both the film and the series and describes the story as:

Somehow, the guitar that he used to love to play and the basketball games that he found so fun just lost their appeal…

That was until Ritsuka Uenoyama randomly met Mafuyu Sato. Ritsuka had started losing his passion for music in his everyday life, but then he hears Mafuyu sing for the first time. The song resonates with his heart and the distance between them starts to change.

Drugstore in Another World Anime Premieres July 7

The official website and Twitter account for the upcoming TV anime adaptation of Kennoji’s Drugstore in Another World: The Slow Life of a Cheat Pharmacist (Cheat Kusushi no Slow Life – Isekai ni Tsukuro Drugstore), light novel series revealed a new promotional video for the anime as well as its July 7 premiere date.

Hifumi Shobo’s light novel imprint Brave Bunko is currently publishing the light novel series and describes the story as:

Reiji, who was tired of living life as a corporate slave, suddenly realizes that he’s been reincarnated into another world. He acquires the skill of creating medicine, which disappoints him because it is not a combat skill. However, the potions he makes with the skill quickly became popular, and he decided to open a drugstore with the money he earned. He enjoys a slow life, using his medicine, creating skills to fulfill the requests of the rare customers who come to his store. This is a heartwarming fantasy about an ordinary young man who used to be a company employee but now lives in a country town in another world.

Heion Sedai no Idaten-tachi Premieres July 22

Earlier this week, the official website for the TV anime adaptation of Coolkyoushinja and Amahara’s Heion Sedai no Idaten-tachi (Idaten Deities in the Peaceful Generation) manga revealed a new trailer and July 22 premiere date for the anime. A new key visual was also revealed.

Anime News Network describes the manga as:

In the manga’s story, gods appeared when humanity was on the verge of destruction due to the work of demons. Deities called “Idaten” fought and sealed away the demons 800 years ago. Nowadays, the Idaten have no fighting experience and they live peaceful lives. But now the demons are reviving, and the battle between gods, humans, and demons is about to begin.

 

Aoashi Anime Announced

This week, Shogakukan announced that Yūgo Kobayashi’s Aoashi manga will receive an anime adaptation to premiere in Spring 2022. Kobayashi drew an illustration to celebrate the announcement. Additional details are yet to be revealed.

Anime News Network describes the manga’s story as:

The manga centers on third-year middle school student Ashito Aoi, who lives in Ehime prefecture. Ashito has a strong talent in soccer, but he tries to hide it. Due to his very straightforward personality, he causes a disaster that serves as a huge setback for him. Then, Tatsuya Fukuya — a veteran of the strong J-Club team Tokyo City Esperion and coach of the club’s youth team — appears in front of Ashito. Tatsuya sees through Ashito and sees his talent, and invites him to try out for the youth team in Tokyo.

My Next Life as a Villainess Season 2 Premieres July 2

The official website for the TV anime adaptation of Satoru Yamaguchi and Nami Hidaka’s My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! (Otome Game no Hametsu Flag Shika Nai Akuyaku Reijō ni Tensei Shiteshimatta…) light novels revealed a new promotional video, visual, cast member, and July 2 premiere date for the anime’s second season.

J-Novel Club publishes the novels in English and describes the story as:

After hitting her head particularly hard one day, Duke Claes’ daughter, Katarina, suddenly recalls all the memories of her past life: that of a teenage Japanese girl. Just before her untimely death, this girl recalls playing an otome game… that is exactly like the world she’s living in now!

She is now Katarina Claes, the antagonist of the otome game, who nastily hounded the protagonist until the end. Knowing all the possible outcomes of the game, she realizes that every single possible route ends with Katarina being murdered or exiled! In order to avoid these Catastrophic Bad Ends, she has to use her knowledge of the game and her own wiles, starting with breaking off this engagement with the prince…

Shikizakura Premieres October

The official website for Chukyo TV and Sublimation’s original anime Shikizakura, via ANN revealed a new promotional video for the anime, as well as its full staff and October premiere date. The trailer previews the opening song “BELIEVE MYSELF” by Asaka

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Project Details

This week, Bandai Namco announced the all-new Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Project ignited initiative as part of the 20th anniversary of the original Mobile Suit Gundam Seed anime next year, during the opening ceremony for the life-size Freedom Gundam statue in Shanghai.

Anime News Network describes the manga’s story as:

The story is set in Cosmic Era 72, during what would become known as the “lost two years” between the two wars. Some call it the time of “peace on thin ice,” while others call it the “brief respite before the next turmoil.” The story follows 17-year-old mobile suit pilot Tatsumi Hōri, 19-year-old commander Miyabi Oto Kiō, 18-year-old Coordinator pilot Ken Noland Suse, and others who risk their lives in an empty unit known as “ODR.”

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed aired from 2002 to 2003. Gundam.info describes the series as:

In Cosmic Era (C.E.) 70…

“The tensions mounted between the Earth Alliance and the ZAFT Forces caused by the ‘Bloody Valentine’ tragedy have erupted into an all-out war.” The Earth Alliance’s mobile armor forces and tanks launch…mobile suits are destroyed one after another…

Getter Robo Arc PV and July 4 Premiere

The official website for the TV anime adaptation of Ken Ishikawa’s Getter Robo Arc, the last arc in the Getter Robo manga series, revealed a new promotional video and July 4 premiere date for the anime. The promotional video previews the anime’s opening theme song “Bloodlines: Unmei no Kettō” (“Fated Lineage”) by JAM Project.

Anime News Network describes the manga’s story as:

The manga’s story centers on the conflict against the Andromeda Country, the new enemy of humanity that seeks to destroy the source of the getter rays that has devastated its civilization. Hope rests on the titular Getter Robo Arc robot, but the appearance of another mysterious Getter robot, piloted by the son of Ryoma Nagare, introduces another complication to the conflict.
