E3 2017: Anthem Gameplay Revealed at Xbox Conference

After yesterday’s EA Play conference, many of us were curious and excited about Bioware’s latest IP, simply titled Anthem. Today it seems that Microsoft saved further details on Anthem for the end of the conference, giving us all new gameplay and a vague look at what we can expect from the new IP when it releases at some point in 2018.

Before we get too deep into the details though, I should point out that Bioware left out a crucial piece of information in their showcase. They mention that there is a cooperative/multiplayer option, where players can go out and undertake missions together; however, they do not state whether or not online multiplayer is required (a la Destiny) or if there is a single player campaign to experience (a la Bioware’s normal fare.) It is likely that there is some variety of single player element to it, as Bioware doesn’t often venture into the multiplayer-only spectrum (aside from Star Wars: The Old Republic and the canceled Shadow Realms IP) but it is too soon to be sure. The focus seems to be on co-op multiplayer, but as previously stated we aren’t entirely sure yet.

What we do know so far about Anthem is that players take on the role of Freelancers – mercenaries for hire that protect the people of a fort-like town and venture out undertaking missions in Javelin exosuits. These exosuits seem to represent different classes: the Ranger exosuit seems more well rounded, while the Colossus exosuit is stated to be more of a tank class. Each player can own more than one Javelin exosuit at a time, so they can try out different classes and figure out what works for them.

In the gameplay, it is stated that players will explore the unknown, protect humanity, and experience a beautiful primeval world, filled with creatures, randomized weapons, and loot. As you explore the world, you will find yourself flying through the world, swimming underwater, and encountering both animals and robotic creatures. There are also large-scale world events, like storms that are meant to draw you off the beaten path, exploring the unknown.

There is so much to this six-minute sneak peek at Anthem’s gameplay footage, and yet there are so many more questions. It seems like this might be Bioware’s answer to Destiny, but does that mean there won’t be things like party member interaction, RPG elements, or so many other things that Bioware is known for? It might be too soon to tell, but Bioware fans should at least give Anthem a chance, we might end up surprised by what we find.
