Valve’s new Steam Link app will be an Android exclusive. At least, that’s for the time being anyway. According to a statement from Valve, Apple has declined to have the new app in its store. The news comes not long after the company initially accepted it into the store.
The app is supposed to let players stream PC games on their mobiles through Steam.
Initial Acceptance
In a statement, Valve said:
“On Monday, May 7th, Apple approved the Steam Link app for release. The following morning, Apple revoked its approval citing business conflicts with app guidelines that had allegedly not been realized by the original review team. The team here spent many hours on this project and the approval process, so we’re clearly disappointed. But we hope Apple will reconsider in the future.”
It isn’t currently known why the app was declined, especially after being initially accepted. Valve announced the Steam Link app earlier this month, with plans to release on Android and iOS shortly after that. The app allows players to stream PC games on their mobiles.
So far, Apple hasn’t commented on either the initial acceptance or eventual rejection of the app. Normally, the company doesn’t comment on individual cases. However, if they do in this case – or if Valve themselves comment further on the matter – we’ll be sure to update you.
Streaming Alternatives
It seems possible its decision is related to concerns that the app circumvents the App Store, letting Valve sell games to iOS users without allowing Apple to get a cut, but that’s purely speculation at this point. Moonlight and Remotr are available as alternatives. Rainway is another streaming service that just entered beta, and will eventually support streaming on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
