Assassin’s Creed 3 to Cut Revolutionary War Main City Philadelphia

Assassin's Creed III

Assassin’s Creed 3 contains three main “cities:” Boston, New York, and “the Frontier.” Conspicuously absent is a city that many feel should have been included in the Revolutionary War-based title given its history as the heart of the American Revolution: Philadelphia.

Originally planned for inclusion, creative director Alex Hutchinson stated that the city was cut due to gameplay reasons:

“When we started out, Philly was one of the cities that we wanted to do. In the end, we decided against it, ’cause when we mocked it up … it’s an architecturally designed city, so it’s on a grid. Which at first we thought would be cool – the first city in AC to be designed on a grid – and then you realize …” Hutchinson said.
A college continued, “Well it’s on a grid and it’s flat, and the avenues are super large. So that’s like three things that made us say it doesn’t work in an open world.”

Philadelphia’s first governor, William Penn, modeled the cities architectural grid lay out after European cities of the time.

Despite some of the design issues caused by the large avenues and rigid layout, Philadelphia is included in some fashion in Assassin’s Creed 3. Hutchinson continues: “That said, there are key events that took place in Philadelphia.”

Exactly how Philadelphia will play into Assassin’s Creed 3, we’ll have to wait until October to find out.
