Ubisoft’s latest intstallment in its long-standing franchise, Assassin’s Creed Unity, will not feature any naval-based gameplay.

The news was confirmed by Lesley Phord-Toy, producer on Assassin’s Creed Unity, who told Examiner, “There’s no naval gameplay in Assassin’s Creed Unity.”

“It goes back to the core idea of bringing Assassin’s Creed to new-gen. We wanted to give players more choices. There were two systems before, climbing and free running,” says Phord-Toy. “[We decided] to combine them so it really feels like parkour. You can go up, you can go down [easily]. [The changes we made] were about making the system more modern and giving players [more freedom]. It’s an open-world so we need to treat it as one.”

Ubisoft had placed an emphasis on the use of naval combat in Assassin’s Creed III and, in particular, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Additionally, Unity being landlocked will make it the first title in the series since the release of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations to not feature naval gameplay.

Assassin’s Creed Unity will be released worldwide on October 28th, 2014 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
