Earlier this year, rumors surfaced that the next entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise would not hit until 2017. Ubisoft confirmed today that their flagship franchise would be taking a break from 2016 so that they could re-evaluate the franchise. As the statement reads, Ubisoft have “updated [their] development processes and recommitted to making Assassin’s Creed a premier open-world franchise.”
There was no word on what the series will look like when it returns and what its setting will be. However, the same source that stated Ubisoft would skip 2016 also stated that the next game would be set in Egypt. Until Ubisoft confirms it, it is pure speculation. Though leaks like this have happened previously (and been proven to be true) when Syndicate was leaked under the code name Victory, and Rogue was code-named Comet.
Assassin’s Creed will not be taking a break overall for 2016 though, as two of the Assassin’s Creed Chronicles games have recently been released: India and Russia. The Assassin’s Creed movie is also set to be released later in 2016 from the director of 2015’s Macbeth, Justin Kurzel, and starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. But the main franchise will remain on hiatus for a while.
