We’ve seen the Avengers assemble on the big screen, but it looks like it’ll be another long while until we see them battle it out on our game consoles. Talking with IGN, Marvel’s game division head now says an Avengers video-game will likely be a long-awaited gem that’ll only “come when we have the right partner.”
TQ Jefferson elaborated that a game tie-in to the Avengers, presumably the cinematic versions included, simply must do justice to its fans if such a project ever goes down.
“The Avengers game will come when we have the right partner, that has the right vision, that has the time to develop a strong, competitive triple-A title and wants to do it right. It has to hit our three pillars: Fun and engaging gameplay, true to the characters, compelling story. Without hitting those notes, we shouldn’t do it. Gamers, they know better. They’re not going to flock to something that’s sub-par.”
It’s on that note that Jefferson seems to think the studio’s reluctance to make any game adaptation is due to Marvel’s distinctly “new attitude” in how it finds partners and builds its games. Commenting on the ill-fated history of the movie licensed game, he admits most examples were “popping out all the time and most of them sucked.”
Marvel is certainly no innocent when it comes to these patterns and when asked whether the poorly received Thor and Captain America movie games had any influence on this, Jefferson admitted to such. “Absolutely, absolutely,” he said. “We got a bloody nose on both of those.” He further claims that “we would rather not have a game than to just sign something to have something out on time.”
Until then, Avengers fans of all ages don’t have long to wait to play incarnations of Earth’s mightiest heroes in some form, albeit it the toy kind.
