Battleborn’s PVP is Now Free-to-Play

Battleborn, the MOBA-shooter from Gearbox, has just celebrated its one year anniversary, and it was announced that the PVP portion of the game is now free-to-play. Gearbox made the announcement earlier this week, and has gone on to clarify what is free for players and what will require a purchase of the full game.

On the assorted storefronts which you can download Battleborn from, players can look for what Gearbox has called the “Free Trial” to download. After this has been downloaded it gives players access to the PVP modes of the game. Gearbox has wisely changed how players start off in Battleborn, and now there is a training mode for new players to work through to learn the basics. Gearbox has now created a specific queue ranking for new players, and as they progress their command rank in the game – up to 20 – various modes will become available. Any players over command rank 20 however cannot play in games with those below command rank 20, but lower level players can play with friends that are higher level by joining a higher level player’s party.

While Battleborn’s PVP is open for all to enjoy, for those that wish to do private matches, the story missions, or do DLC ops missions, they must purchase the full game. For private matches, however, there is a booster that can be purchased in the shop that will allow players access to private matches for 24 hours. A reason that players may want to have access to story missions, is that they are great for farming for loot for the game. While you can get some of the games packs via currency from PVP games, which can be used to buy assorted packs for gear, it is far easier and faster to play story missions to get gear from them. As Battleborn is basically a MOBA-shooter, gear is essential to set up players to let them play the characters the way they want in their matches.

While Battleborn has taken quite a hit in player count over the last year, Gearbox has stood by their MOBA-shooter, and provided the game with players, story missions, new maps, and now hopefully this shift to free-to-play for PVP will help give the game a breath of fresh air.
