Bungie Might Be Bringing Big Changes To Destiny 2’s Shader System

If you’ve played or still play Destiny 2, there’s a good chance that you’re unhappy with the current shader system – especially if you were an avid Destiny (2014) player. In a This Week At Bungie update posted yesterday, Senior Design Lead Tyson Green said the team is looking at ways the system could be enhanced, even hinting at the potential return of the shader system in Destiny 2 from the first game.

“We know you miss D1 Armor Shader mechanics,” the update said. “[We are] looking at ways to re-integrate that capability without losing the ability to shade weapons, Ghosts, ships, Sparrows, or customize specific pieces of armor.”

“We also understand you want shaders to be more freely usable and not limited by availability,” the update continued. “We’re looking at reintroducing shader collections or a way to get copies of a shader in your possession.”

For those who prefer D1’s shader system, good news might be on the way for your guardian in Destiny 2. In the first Destiny game, when you received a shader, you had it permanently in your inventory. Furthermore, each shader applied to your entire Guardian. In Destiny 2, shaders can be applied to individual pieces of armor, but each shader is a one-time use – once you use it, you lose it, (unless you have more.)

This system left many players feeling confused. Many were happy that they could apply shaders to individual armor pieces, which resulted in greater customization options, but many were equally unhappy that each shader was a one-time use item.

Currently, the update doesn’t confirm anything regarding shaders, except that the team is working to bring changes players will like to the system.

“This work is ongoing, and we’ll go on record as to when the solution will land as we get closer to a fix that we test and certify,” the update states. “For now, it was important to us that you know it’s on our workbench.”
