Catacombs Coming from Square Enix

Siliconera has announced their Square Enix exclusive, offering up a host of information about a shooter called Catacombs from the now-defunct Cavia developer of Nier. A former Cavia and AQ Interactive staffer revealed a number of details on the game, which was supposed to be announced at E3 2011 before being put on hold.

The game is set in the Museum of Natural History in New York. Catacombs tells the story of four visitors caught in an event which leaves them trapped in a labyrinth beneath the museum. The gameplay is a party-based shooter with strong RPG elements. Guns level up and evolve, gaining heads and limbs; enemies drop magic rings which allow players to cast spells.

One unusual aspect of the game is the lack of a fixed level design. It doesn’t matter if playing alone or with friends, the goal is to reach the exit to the next level through a twisting set of randomly-generated corridors.

If sources from Siliconera are to be believed, Square Enix has not shelved the game altogether, but the future of the game is uncertain. More details should be available in the coming weeks.
