Chernobylite – Review

Radiation Man

Chernobylite is an indie survival horror game based on the real world Chernobyl disaster. A nuclear disaster blanketing a portion of Russia; making inhabitable for many years. Chernobylite follows this, but adds cosmic horrors and a scummy corporation, the NAR, that would give Umbrella a run for their money. Creatures from the beyond hunt in the lands; attacking anyone who dares to step forward. The Nar, a scum bag corporation that caused the Chernobyl disaster, yet, still seeks the power of Chernobylite and will stop at nothing to harness it’s powers.

Essentially, Chernobylites are radiation crystals that can do anything like bend space and time. Our character, Igor Khymynuk, knows about the this and seeks them too, but for a different reason. His wife, Tatyana, went missing after the disaster and he believes the Chernobylite can assist him finding her. So, he hired two mercenaries to infiltrate the NAR head quarters to nab him a Chernobylite. However, not everything goes to plan when the Black Stalker appears and kills one of the hired helps. Out gunned, Igor and the other helper bail with the Chernobylite. They recuperate at their base planning a new heist towards the NAR. Before taking on the NAR and finding Tatyana; they need more man power, weapons, and equipment.

Closing thoughts: My time with Chernobylite has been thoroughly enjoyable. The story telling was really compelling with likable interesting characters. Every choices can have short or long reaching effects; giving the game a great amount of replay ability. Core mechanics such as the team and base mechanics are essential for the game’s final mission, the heist. However, the default difficulty does devalue those core mechanics, so I recommend placing everything on a harder difficulty for a better experience.
