Nintendo asked Criterion, the studio behind the Burnout franchise, to work on an F-Zero game for the Wii U. The console manufacturer wanted to show a demo of the game at E3 2011. Unfortunately, Criterion was busy working on Need for Speed: Most Wanted for EA and had no time to make F-Zero.

“The objective was to show off a playable vertical slice of the game at E3 which would give fans a taste of what the full release would entail,” said an anonymous source. “A quick turnaround was essential, but sadly Criterion was hard at work on bringing Need for Speed: Most Wanted to multiple platforms and therefore couldn’t spare the resources at the time.”

This report was later confirmed by Alex Ward, founder of Criterion.

The F-Zero franchise has been dormant for some time now but these latest revelations show that Nintendo has not forgotten the series. Would you be interested in an F-Zero Wii U game from Criterion? Let us know in the comments section below.
