Destiny 2 is still slated to be released in 2017, which was confirmed in an Activision earning call today. In a slide used in the earning call, it stated that there will be a “full Destiny sequel in 2017 to broaden the franchise’s global reach, which along with follow-on content plans, sets the stage for growth.” This is good news for fans who are looking forward to the future of the game, and who are already finished with the content that was released last September.
Bungie in general have been fairly silent on the progress of the game, and even what the story will be for the upcoming sequel. Plenty of rumours have been flying around, speculating a focus on the Cabal, the war-minded race that has thus far been the least used of the species of Destiny. This makes sense as during a story mission during The Taken King expansion, when players are aboard a Cabal ship, a distress signal is sent off to the home of the Cabal empire. It’s a mission that players probably played a number of times, but the repercussions have so far been left unseen. Destiny has had stories and raids focused on the other three key species (the Hive, the Fallen and the Vex) so it makes sense that the Cabal would be a focus for Destiny 2.
Destiny 2 is also looking to have a major overhaul, and various rumours are pointing to the fact that players will more than likely not be bringing over everything that they have accumulated in their Destiny journey so far. The game is apparently going to play a little differently, so it makes sense that there would be no need to bring over the countless weapons and gear that players have gotten used to using, which will allow the developers to overhaul most parts of the game including gear but still have the core guardian abilities intact. It’s also known that a number of studios such as High Moon are helping with the game, so hopefully we see a variety of changes made including the use of vehicles in the game. We’ll see if by E3 Bungie will reveal a bit more as to what they are planning.
The fact that Activision still has big plans for Destiny is great to hear. The talk of growth and expansion, even towards the potential PC release of the franchise, means that there is a long way to go on the journey that is Destiny.
