DOOM Eternal broke the DOOM series’ launch record for opening weekend sales, doubling the launch sales of the 2016-released reboot. Bethesda Softworks and developer id Software revealed the news this week. For its release week, Doom Eternal also was the bestselling Steam game, surpassing 100,000 concurrent active players on the platform.

The game, developed by id Software, takes players on a journey across dimensions with the next big leap in push-forward, first-person combat. Powered by the idTech 7 engine, and an all-new soundtrack by Mick Gordon, DOOM Eternal puts the player in control of DOOM Slayer, to rip apart new and classic demons with weapons old and new.

DOOM Eternal Sales Compared To Other Entries

To put this into perspective, let’s take a look at what happened for previous series entries. The 1993 original came out and sold between two and three million physical copies and 1.15 million shareware copies up until 1999. Doom II sold 1.55 million units of all types in the USA during this same period. A quarter of that amount was also sold in Europe.

This totals to about five to six million units sold for the original duo. Doom 3 sold 3.5 million copies along with many Resurrection of Evil (its expansion pack) units as well. Up to this point, it was the most successful entry in the series. Unfortunately, Doom 64 sales were not disclosed.

DOOM (2016) sold over two million units on PC alone, in between its May 2016 launch and July 2017. It was surpassed in its launch month only by Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End in both the US and Europe.

If Doom Eternal’s sales for the opening week serve as any indication, sales look to be promising for id Software and Bethesda’s newest title.
