Dota and LoL Compared

The audience of eSports has grown significantly in recent years. According to various reports, the total number of ordinary viewers and fans of eSports will reach 557 million by 2021. Betting on games is becoming more popular, and success depends directly on the MOBA you choose. Live broadcasts of League of Legends and Dota 2 on Twitch attract the majority of viewers – 24% and 29% respectively.

Gamers of each game have an argument with each other about which one is the best to play. There is no direct answer to this question because it only depends on a gamer’s taste. However, in this article, we will compare these two.

League of Legends

LoL was released in October 2009 by Riot Games. The game arena is based on a custom map previously created for WarCraft III. The original mod has been simplified, making LoL more attractive to eSports newcomers.

Dota 2

Another king in the MOBA games niche, Dota 2, was introduced to the players in July 2013. Valve also took the mod of WarCraft III as the basis but made it more strategic. Dota 2 offers 115 unique characters as part of its gameplay.

LoL and Dota 2: Comparing Gameplay and Universes

As you may have noticed, both games were based in the same fashion, but each of them had unique features. When comparing LoL and Dota 2, we notice that both games have a similar map, which includes the upper, middle, and bottom lines, as well as the forest. To win the match, players must fulfill the main goal – in both games, it is the destruction of the enemy base: Nexus (League of Legends) and Ancient (Dota 2). Players must also guard the biggest neutral monsters: Baron (League of Legends) and Roshan (Dota 2).

The match starts with the laning stage, during which players must gain experience and gold. This allows you to raise the level of heroes and improve their skills to attack the enemy team with maximum force. As soon as the laning phase ends, players group together and work together for the benefit of their team. Their goal is to destroy as many enemy players and buildings as possible.

Popularity in eSports

Both of these games have become a major phenomenon of esports discipline. But Dota has a slight advantage in terms of people involved in it. At the same time betting companies that offer Dota bets 2020 focus more on this game than on LoL. But by no means there is something very big difference. In this regard, Russia is particularly famous because of the fact that the country has one of the strongest players in Dota and their teams are famous all over the world.

What’s the Difference?

Although there are some commonalities when comparing LoL and Dota 2, they still have many more differences, both in the gameplay and in non-game. First of all, the laning phase differs. Dota 2 has fewer skill shots, a skill that you need to aim manually, which leads to less chance of hitting an enemy from a distance.

Another difference is the presence of a courier, which brings the characters items during the laning. Courier in Dota 2 is a game unit that later becomes flying for faster delivery. LoL, in turn, does not have couriers, so the champions themselves have to return to the base to buy items.

Even if some of the characters in these games may be similar, their roles and abilities are different. For example, LoL support heroes are mostly responsible only for securing their ADC, while in Dota 2 they are actively involved in the entire gameplay and in battles. In addition, players in Dota 2 can use the mechanics of “finishing” when their creeps are destroyed to prevent enemies from gaining gold and experience, while in LoL “finishing” is impossible – you can only kill the opponent’s minions.

Speaking of roles, in League of Legends, they are defined even before the game, when in Dota 2 the hero can be played in more than one role. By comparison, LoL has 5 main roles, while Dota 2 offers 9. In addition, the character in LoL can have only 4 abilities (3 main and 1 ultimatum), while the heroes of Dota 2 their number can reach 14.

One of the main goals of the player is to raise the level of his character. LoL has a maximum level of 18 and Dota 2 has a maximum of 25. In the second case, the player needs more time to raise the level of the hero. In order to become even stronger, the player needs to buy certain items that increase the power of the character.

Conclusion

Both games have implemented everything possible to provide users with the most exciting gaming experience. League of Legends may seem simpler than Dota 2, where a lot of things are tied to the character’s abilities. Betting on LoL and Dota 2 is generally impossible without understanding their basic principles and features. Knowing the basics alone will not help you get a decent win or deprive you of it altogether. It is also advisable to watch live matches regularly to better explore the tactics and strategies of professional players.
