E3 2017: Star Wars Battlefront II Gameplay and First DLC Plans Revealed

Star Wars Battlefront II‘s gameplay was finally unveiled during the EA Play 2017 press conference, ahead of this years E3. While trailers have been around showing off the game engine, this was the first time that EA and DICE had shown off the game in action. The trailer was a very effective hype piece, showing off pieces from all eras of the films.

Some of the biggest highlights included, surprisingly, a battle on Naboo from the prequel trilogy, with Clone Troopers and Battle Droids abound. The map looks absolutely gorgeous, and was definitely a standout in the trailer. Perhaps even more so was the inclusion of Darth Maul. Still a fan favorite, the dual-bladed lightsaber-wielding Sith looked as impressive as ever, and looks to be a great deal of fun to play with on the battlefield. Also included were scenes including Yoda, Rey, Kylo Ren, and Boba Fett, with more likely to be revealed.

It was also revealed that the game would be including a class system for players to choose from, much like DICE’s Battlefield games. There is a support-focused officer, a robotic assault trooper who will be the all around soldier, a heavy trooper, and the specialist that is more of a sniper role. This should prove to be interesting and should add some great dynamics in team composition as opposed to the first game, however star cards will be coming back so there will be more customization still available to players.

One other key piece of information that EA revealed is that DLC for Star Wars Battlefront II will be free. For the previous Battlefront, the season pass for the game cost almost as much as the game itself did, which tended to keep players separated. EA has stated that they don’t want to separate the player base, so they will be releasing DLC in “seasons”. Each season will have new characters, maps, star cards, etc, that will be available for all players. The first DLC season will include Finn and Captain Phasma as the first heroes available. It is unknown what type of offering that EA will come up with in order to make some money post-purchase, but things like loot crates or skins will probably make an appearance at some point.

Star Wars Battlefront II is looking fantastic, and EA and DICE appear to have listened to what people liked and disliked about the first one. The single player campaign that is focused on a TIE pilot, all new maps, space combat, and free DLC all sounds like they are making a great Star Wars package.
