This is Emperor Palpatine’s Real Name

Everything is as the universe foresaw: Palpatine’s name is about as *ahem* “unusual” as we’d have expected.

For decades, fans of Star Wars have pondered the name “Palpatine” since his visage graced cinema screens in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back. What’s the name that’s printed on his mail? “Palpatine Palpatine?” That undoubtedly conjures up buried memories of a certain plumber’s cinematic debut. No, it’s something entirely more bizarre than that.

A leaked excerpt from James Luceno’s upcoming novel Tarkin reveals that the galactic emperor’s FIRST name is none other than…

Duh duh duh!

Sheev!

In a galaxy dominated by figures going by the likes of Jar Jar and Savage Opress, maybe it’s hardly that daunting of a revelation. For now, the name’s Wookiepedia entry (Wookiepedia’s the official Star Wars online encyclopedia) remains unedited, and while it can be edited by just about anyone, there’s been no correction in the meantime. We’ll no doubt learn just a bit more when Luceno’s novel comes out this November.

Tarkin releases next month to tell the tale of the Grand Moff of the same name that oversaw and managed the original Death Star that “gives Grand Moff Tarkin the Star Wars: Darth Plagueis treatment, bringing a legendary character from A New Hope to full, fascinating life.” We’ll have to see about that.

You can read the full publisher’s summary below:

Five standard years have passed since
Darth Sidious proclaimed himself galactic
Emperor. The brutal Clone Wars are a memory,
and the Emperor’s apprentice, Darth Vader,
has succeeded in hunting down most of the
Jedi who survived dreaded Order 66. On
Coruscant a servile Senate applauds the
Emperor’s every decree, and the populations
of the Core Worlds bask in a sense of
renewed prosperity.

In the Outer Rim, meanwhile, the myriad
species of former Separatist worlds find
themselves no better off than they were
before the civil war. Stripped of weaponry
and resources, they have been left to fend
for themselves in an Empire that has largely
turned its back on them.

Where resentment has boiled over into acts
of sedition, the Empire has been quick to
mete out punishment. But as confident as
he is in his own and Vader’s dark side
powers, the Emperor understands that only
a supreme military, overseen by a commander
with the will to be as merciless as he is,
can secure an Empire that will endure for
a thousand generations….
