Paragon, Epic Games

One of the more interesting additions to the MOBA genre, Paragon, is sadly coming to an end on April 26, 2018. Paragon creators Epic made the announcement today via a blog post and social media updates, informing players of their decision. They note that for the next few months as more and more players leave the game, that wait times will most likely get longer up until the last day.

The glory days of the Legacy map in Paragon, Epic Games

This is confirmation of rumors that were started last week when Epic made a post to the community discussing the state of the game. They noted that the game had not picked up with players the way they had hoped, and the retention was not sustainable for what they needed out of the game. The other side of that was interior staffing. As many know Epic also has Fortnite on their plates to deal with, and Fortnite Battle Royale, the free-to-play battle royale game has become incredibly popular, and bigger than even Epic expected. They talk about how Fortnite BR has become its own beast, and they have slowly been taking more and more staff off of other projects and putting them onto it. This has been noticeable in the Paragon community as larger updates have been slow to come, and patches have not dealt with what players often hoped they would. While Epic made a plea to the community for ideas on how to push Paragon and make it sustainable, it seemed to already be too late for the game.

In Epic’s post, they detailed how players can get refunds for any money that they have spent on the game, which again is detailed here. Paragon was an ambitious and often gorgeous MOBA that unfortunately had a few too many in-game and developer issues and it’s going to be sad to see it go. I personally have put hundreds of hours into the game and loved the take on MOBAs. Making it a 3rd-person action game was fantastic design choice in my opinion. Were you a fan of the game and will you be moving on to other MOBAs like Smite? Tell us your Paragon stories in the comments below.

Also, keep an eye on the Gaming Historia Podcast this coming week as Chris and Colby have a discussion about digital gaming and how shutdowns could be affecting the digital market.

Source: Epic Games blog post
