Final Fantasy XIV Hits Five Million Copies Sold

More than five million people have bought the Square Enix MMO Final Fantasy XIV. The game’s producer and director, Naoki Yoshida, announced the figure at this year’s Japan Expo. Square Enix has not revealed how many active subscribers the game currently has.

Final Fantasy XIV was met with scathing criticism when it first launched in 2010. In response, the game underwent a change of management and a significant overhaul. It was shut down in 2012 and relaunched in 2013 as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. This new version was praised by fans and the press as a huge improvement over the original.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is now available for PC, Mac, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. The game’s first expansion, Heavensward, was released last month.
