Frank Miller’s Back for More Batman with The Dark Knight III

Hot of the heels of his first ever onscreen debut with the Man of Steel, DC Comics’s Dark Knight is returning to his roots with the writer that’s credited with putting “dark” and “knight” in the same sentence in a Batman story.

The follow-up to 1986’s cult-classic of The Dark Knight Returns and its sequel, The Dark Knight Strikes Again, The Dark Knight III: The Master Race picks where comic legend Frank Miller left off.

Due this fall, the eight-issue comic will complete Miller’s Dark Knight Trilogy that followed the adventures of an elderly Batman called back into action by the return of his old enemies in an America ruled by President Lex Luthor. Miller will be joined by 100 Bullets and Wonder Woman scribe Brian Azzarello and no doubt have something to do with a certain Kryptonian by account of the ominous emblem in the teaser art below.

“Batman remains my favorite comic book hero and a sequel to Dark Knight is going to be daunting,” said Miller, “but we’ll do our best.”

Originally, The Dark Knight Returns featured a Superman blackmailed into serving as President Luthor’s enforcer who, like director Zack Snyder’s upcoming film, fought an armored Batman. When and where the comic takes place from that story is unknown, but current Batman star Ben Affleck’s said the film’s definitely “inspired” by Miller’s work.

According to Azzarello, “It’s been an amazing experience collaborating with Frank these past six months. I think we have an epic story that these characters truly deserve.”
