Games for Breakfast: E3 2017 Open to the Public

Welcome to Games for Breakfast, a new feature series here on BagoGames!

Games for Breakfast, written by Features Editor Angelo De Bellis, is a daily opinion piece of about 250-500 words—I gotta keep it brief—that engages topical game news. Every new post will go live at 9am EST so that you can grab your cup of coffee and read a brief account of a particular gamer’s take on the latest goings-on in the industry.

Yesterday’s news of the 2017 Electronic Entertainment Expo being open to the public was somewhat alarming, though expected. With the rise in fan news from social media sources like YoutTube and Twitch, it was only a matter of time that such exposure would be considered just an important as expert opinions driven by professional games journalists.

And while I see nothing wrong with enthusiast-driven content, I wonder how E3 will be kept organized with such an influx. Traditional media has certainly changed, and in many ways that’s a good thing–it means there are more opinions out there for your reading/viewing pleasure, there are more discussions, and there are more fail-safes keeping everyone in the industry honest. But I worry that, as an enormous event, inviting the general public may prevent both professionals and non-professionals alike from getting the appropriate coverage.

As a Canadian journalist, I have yet to have the pleasure of attending E3, so I really can’t comment on the organization that goes into herding the crowds along, but simply from watching streams and such, it’s apparent that a lot can go wrong. Perhaps they had it right last year, when the public was invited but they were separated from the main event. Though the streets and pathways between buildings may have been completely clogged, the sanctioning hopefully benefited all attendees eager for content.

What do you think? Do you like the amalgam of journalists, enthusiasts, and fans all in one center for E3 2017? Are you excited just to have the opportunity to attend?
