Games for Breakfast: Valentine’s Day and Catherine

Welcome to Games for Breakfast, a new feature series here on BagoGames!

Games for Breakfast, written by Features Editor Angelo De Bellis, is a daily opinion piece of about 250-500 words—I gotta keep it brief—that engages topical game news. Every new post will go live at 9am EST so that you can grab your cup of coffee and read a brief account of a particular gamer’s take on the latest goings-on in the industry.

Good morning and Happy Valentine’s Day!

When it comes to Valentine’s, I begin thinking about all the games imbued with love. Not love as in crafted with care, but love as in games containing suggestive themes, romance, passion, and . . . you get where I’m going. Such thoughts lead me to thinking about a classic puzzler, one that many may have missed, and one that really embarks on an exploration of what it means to be dedicated: Catherine.

This 2011 title had the most intricate storyline for a puzzler. If you just watched the gameplay videos of a guy in his boxers pulling and pushing leagues of stacked blocks, you’d probably have a hard time imagining that he was having an upside down nightmare, grasping onto his pillow in fright of falling into the abyss. Yes, Vincent was indeed fighting for his life, traversing a suspended blocks to make his way out of the dirty pit that was unfaithfulness. He wasn’t being truthful to his girlfriend Katherine, vying instead to gain the affection of the new, hot blonde he meets in the city bar, Catherine. It all ends with an interesting tale about a man’s anxieties of marriage and committance, and his willingness to go the distance to salvage his relationship–and his life.

If you haven’t yet played Catherine or haven’t even heard of it, I hope my odd little explanation of it will nudge you in the right direction—if you like puzzles and story, I’m certain you’ll love it. In any case, let me know what video game(s) you think of when it comes to Valentine’s Day!
