Gamescom 2014: PS4 System Update v2.00 brings Share Play

Sony, like Microsoft, had a successful press briefing today. There were announcements around new games, previously announced games, betas, DLC, exclusives, channels, and more. Sony also took the time to announce they’ll be releasing a rather large system update called v2.00.

Included in this update will be a feature called Share Play. Sony describes this feature as a “virtual couch”. Players will now be able to experience the local co-op experience online, with friends. The beauty of this feature is the other person does not need to own the game. Yes, you read that correct. Players can play the same game as long as one of the players owns the game. In theory, players will now be able to play with friends in games that already feature co-op or online play. For example, Towerfall Ascenion has couch co-op only. With Share Play, Sony takes this limitation away and will allow friends to set off and finish quest mode together.

Share Play doesn’t stop here though. For gamers who like to share or are having a difficult time in certain sections of the game, Sony has now given players the ability to pass the controller to a friend so they can have a turn to help the other player out.

System Upadate v2.00 is due to be released this fall. Other features to be rolled out in this update are:

– Dedicated App support for YouTube
– Upload gameplay footage to YouTube
– What’s New will see real-time activity
– Real name search capabilities

Sony plans to have more features included in the update, which they’ll announce closer to the release date.
