Gamestop has put a “temporary pause” on their PowerPass rental program. The program has been delayed due to unknown issues. Although it had a soft launch this week, Kotaku speculates the delay has to do with the computer system. Employees told Kotaku the company’s antiquated computers weren’t equipped to handle the new program. A GameStop spokesperson said:
“We have elected to temporarily pause the roll out of the new PowerPass subscription service, based on a few program limitations we have identified. We feel this is the right thing to do for now to ensure we are able to provide our guests an exceptional service,”
The PowerPass program allowed people to pay $60 to rent a pre-owned game for as long as they like for six months. During that six months, they can return it and exchange it for another pre-owned game. At the end of the six months, players keep the last game they rented out.
For those that did pay for the PowerPass program, a full refund will be issued as well as a free pre-owned game to make up for it. GameStop has not said when the program would be reinstated.
It is a nice gesture to see GameStop making it up to the customers. A full refund and a game on top of it is a nice deal to make up for the delay. Whatever the issue is, hopefully it does get resolved soon. If it is a computer issues, it’s odd they didn’t test it before the rollout. Although, I imagine it shouldn’t be that big of an issue if it’s a delay. Had it been canceled, then the company may have really been in trouble.
