Gears of War Will be Getting the Movie Treatment

Gears of War

It was a matter of time, but now it looks like a Gears of War movie is officially happening. Rod Fergusson, the head of The Coalition and all things Gears of War, announced during a livestream today that the movie is in the pre-production stages. It will be made in partnership with Universal Studios, Microsoft and The Coalition.

Unfortunately, no release date was announced yet and no details on the crew behind it besides Scott Stuber, who is known for producing a lot of movies that I would never call “good”. His filmography includes movies like BattleshipThe InternshipCentral Intelligence, Free State of Jones, 47 Ronin, and the upcoming Patriots Day. However, he’s at least produced films and partnering with Universal might mean this movie could see the light of day. So many other video game movies seem to be having a hard time actually getting beyond the pre-production phase.

I always worry about games being turned into movies, not because they have a track record of being bad (they do), but because the reason they aren’t good is due to a lack of understanding on what makes film different from games. The same can be said bringing films into video game form. However, Fergusson at least acknowledged during the stream that they are looking at making it a good film and not just a game tie-in.

How do you feel about a film set in the Gears of War universe? Excited? Let us know in the comments below!
