Ghost in the Shell Does More Damage Control, Hires Asian Actor

(Rila Fukushima in Arrow)

Assuming you’ve come in contact with any form of animation, you’re probably aware of a little anime film titled Ghost in the Shell. If you browse the internet (and it’s safe to assume you do), you’ve heard there is going to be a live action Ghost in the Shell adaptation starring Scarlett Johansson. The popular 1995 film is set in Japan and features very Asian-centric themes and all characters appear to be of Asian descent. Well, based on that information, you’ll notice that Scarlett Johansson isn’t Japanese. Neither is the majority of the starring cast that includes Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbæk, and Juliette Binoche. It seems Dreamworks, the studio releasing the film, and director Rupert Sanders decided to add another Asian actor into the mix.

Rila Fukushima of Arrow and The Wolverine fame has been cast in an unspecified role for the film. Fukushima was a particularly great addition to the cast of The Wolverine as the superhero’s bodyguard. As of now, there is no trailer or promotional still past the one featuring Scarlett with her bob haircut. This news probably won’t curb people’s hatred towards the film, but it shows that studios are at least willing to bargain with the public opinion.

Ghost in the Shell is set to be released on March 31st 2017.
