At first glance it might seem like Gotham Knights is a sequel to Arkham Knight. Batman is notably absent in the Gotham Knights world. Which leaves the crime-fighting up to the Gotham Knights. This fits perfectly in with the ending to Arkham Knight, in which Batman is seen either dying or disappearing.
But developer Warner Bros. Games Montreal has stated this will not be the case. In fact, Gotham Knights take place in a separate continuity, despite the similar connections to Arkham Knight.
Apparently, the Arkham continuity is actually continued in Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League by Rocksteady. An odd choice, given that Gotham Knights seem to have more similarities. There doesn’t seem to be any obvious connections between the Arkham games and the upcoming Suicide Squad game.
It’s probably wise to put Gotham Knights in a separate timeline either way since this gives the developer some room to shake things up a bit. And it does make sense that Rocksteady will be continuing the franchise, considering they developed 3 of the 4 Arkham games.
It will be a while until we can play Suicide Squad though. While Gotham Knights is planned for a 2021 release, we will have to wait until 2022 to play Suicide Squad. So those hoping for a continuation of Arkham will have to wait a bit longer.
A Rich Universe
Of course, that does not mean you shouldn’t enjoy the game though. Despite it being in a separate continuity, it seems like a game worth checking out for those into the Batman Arkham series. If anything, it seems to take a lot of inspiration from those games, but with more of an RPG element. So there will be plenty of stuff for Batman fans to enjoy.
