Happy 25th Birthday Game Boy

In 1989 the world was introduced to a wonderful new gaming console, one that would change the way gamers played games forever. Nintendo’s Game Boy was not the first hand held gaming system, but it was the one who opened the door to affordable on-the-go gaming. The earlier handheld game systems from Atari and Sega were expensive and the batteries (no they were not rechargeable ones) had to be changed too often which made it very costly for children and adults.

Nintendo made their Game Boy affordable and new batteries would last about 30 hours of gameplay. We can never forget how Tetris became so addictive because it was on the Game Boy, since it could be taken anywhere gamers could spend more time trying to position falling blocks. Game Link cables became popular with Tetris which allowed multiplayer games to occur outside a house and arcade.

The Pokemon series, from the mind of Satoshi Tajiri, got it’s first games, Pokemon Red and Blue, on the Game Boy and the first Pokemon trade occurred through the Game Link cable. Game Boy games are still enjoyed today by both veteran and new gamers through Nintendo’s Virtual Console. Thank you for the happy years of gaming you have given us and for inspiring the handheld gaming industry. Happy 25th Birthday Game Boy!
