Happy Birthday Nintendo 64

NINTENDO 64

Well, the Nintendo 64 has finally hit the 20-year mark; your favorite childhood console is now one year away from being able to drink. While the original release date was set for September 29, 1996, the console was delivered prematurely on September 26. The weird thing about this launch was the fact that only two titles launched with the system. This is a risky move and may have hurt the N64 at its onset. Legend of Zelda didn’t hit for quite some time, but I know that most of my buddies bought it then to play the first 3D Zelda title.  I remember seeing the N64 kiosk at the Blockbuster I worked at, and staying late to try out Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64. It really is hard to believe that 20 years ago I was experiencing 3D gaming for the first time. Here are some of the best trailers to bring about those tears of nostalgia.

I remember seeing this one while saving money to get a console during that generation.

This commercial made me sad, seeing as I could never get too far in its predecessor.

This commercial was probably better than the game it was advertising, but I don’t ever remember hearing anything good about Battletanx.

These goofy commercials are the best: I remember the Battletanx one the most because I laughed the hardest at it. Unfortunately for 3DO it didn’t prompt me to buy the game. Instead, I just rattled off about the commercial to everyone I saw. I really wish publishers would bring these types of commercials back; now they take themselves too seriously and have sucked all the fun out. But I digress . . . what games will you be playing for Nintendo’s big milestone?
