Happy Birthday Sega Dreamcast

Some dates just have a very special meaning to me, mostly because they are a play on digits. For instance, the Sega Dreamcast was released on 9/9/99, which was a big deal back then, and Skyrim was released on 11/11/11. These are neat little tricks that help you remember the titles and systems, but they also hold great memories for me. Personally, I can’t believe that it’s been 17 years since Sega released its final console to the masses. I remember waiting with heightened anticipation for Dreamcast’s release, just due to the fact that a new Resident Evil would launch alongside it. Since I was a poor college student, I didn’t have the funds to purchase the system right on the release date. Luckily I had a friend who bought one, but never really used it, so I went out and bought Resident Evil: Code Veronica so that I could play Capcom’s latest treasure on someone else’s console. Many a night were spent in my dorm room fighting the evil T-virus monsters and searching for life-giving herbs. I think that is my favorite memory from the system—just the chance to play the last “tank-control” entry in the Resident Evil series. Here are some old commercials to tickle your nostalgia, and make sure you leave your favorite memories in the comments.

1) I totally remember watching this ad on my tubed television.

2) Here’s another one, this time for Sonic! Maybe this will be his career after Sonic Lost World.

3) These were some great commercials to see on WB when I was younger. I never saw this one as a kid, but I’m sure if I had, I would have grabbed  a copy of it before the prices skyrocketed.

The late ’90s were some great and experimental times for gaming, what I would call its “awkward” phase. Thankfully gaming has gone from ugly duckling to beautiful swan, but even now I love to fire up my Dreamcast and play some 32-bit goodness. What are your favorite Dreamcast memories?
