Hellblade Developer Diary Talks Making a Believable Character

Hellblade Development Diary 20: Movement & Control

Hellblade looks to be one of those games that will try to create a totally unique experience that the player has never seen before. Development diaries are used these days to portray background knowledge about a title (in this case, a video game), or to show the developing process behind the creation. In this developer diary Ninja Theory, creators of Hellblade and Enslaved,  talk about their first attempt at motion capture animation and how it then merged into wanting a more realistic human look for Senua, the main protagonist.

Tameem Antoniades, Chief Creative Ninja (that’s his title), talks about the transition from basic animation work to the more modern and precise form of animation – motion capture. “In our early third person action games the character was little more than a robot that you would push around through the world and in Enslaved we then took the idea that the characters alive and started to incorporate some body language so she could express back to the player.”

“We already had Senua walking around the world in a basic fashion but we kept wanting to add more layers like what would she look like if she was frightened, when shes waiting through water, when shes wounded and the list just kept growing and growing.”

Hellblade is set to release on PS4 and PC. Release date is still to be determined.

Developers that want to push themselves in order to create a better experience for the player is always an appreciative touch in my book.
