‘Hunger Games’ Mild Success at the Weekend Box Office

The third film in the series, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 failed to exceed it’s previous record, but still managed to be one of the biggest openings for 2014. It brought in $123,000,000 over the weekend which, while impressive, was a step down from Catching Fire with a  $158,000,000 opening. The rest of this week’s movies all took logical dips from such a large take by the mega-franchise. Big Hero 6 has proved its strength at the box office by remaining in the #2 slot and may remain there over Thanksgiving weekend. The only big move up the list is The Theory of Everything which opened up into 99 more theaters.

  1. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1: $123,000,000
  2. Big Hero 6: $20,086,000
  3. Interstellar: $15,100,000
  4. Dumb and Dumber To:  $13,820,000
  5. Gone Girl: $2,815,000
  6. Beyond the Lights: $2,630,000
  7. St. Vincent: $2,354,000
  8. Fury (2014): $1,900,000
  9. Birdman: $1,855,000
  10. The Theory of Everything: $1,500,000

This week will see Wednesday releases of the dark comedy sequel Horrible Bosses 2 and Dreamworks’ new animated spin-off film Penguins of Madagascar.
