After directing the critically and commercially beloved sequel/reboot/remake, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, you’d think that J.J Abrams would give him self a good pat on the back and look forward to his next project. But good ol’ Abrams can’t quite catch a break with the fans. After admitting that he overuses lens flares, to sulking about making Star Trek Into Darkness, one of the most hated pieces of canon in the Star Trek universe, he admits to another one of his screw-ups.
Fans became a bit riled up about a small scene between General Leia, Chewbacca, and new lead Rey. After witnessing the death of Han Solo, Chewie and Rey arrive back to the home base to debrief and close out the film. Leia sees Rey right when she gets off the ship and approaches her slowly for a somber hug. How could Leia ignore Chewie, arguably Han’s best friend, and go straight to Rey?
“My thinking at the time was that Chewbacca, despite the pain he was feeling, was focused on trying to save Finn and getting him taken care of. So I tried to have Chewbacca go off with him and focus on Rey, and then have Rey find Leia and Leia find Rey. The idea being that both of them being strong with the Force and never having met, would know about each other — that Leia would have been told about her beyond what we saw onscreen and Rey of course would have learned about Leia. And that reunion would be a meeting and a reunion all in one, and a sort of commiseration of their mutual loss.”
While that is a strong case for the importance, it still comes across as a little ignorant to the basic knowledge of these characters. Then again, I think Abrams can rest easy that Star Wars fans are choosing this moment to really pick on him. Now that’s an achievement.
