The Overlook | Little Deviants Review

This is a new feature here on Bagogames I’d like to introduce where I take a newly released game and write a quick review of it due to the game lacking in certain key areas. With this being said, and with my newly obtained piece of hardware I’d like to look at one of the many launch titles of the PS Vita. Many who had pre-ordered the Vita back in February of this year, got Little Deviants as a free game pre-loaded onto the 4gb memory card bundled inside the box. Now if you didn’t pre-order it like many consumers (me), you are probably wondering if this tech-demo like game is really worth the asking price or if it should be ignored like most of the release games for the Vita.

The graphics are mediocre at best, compared to other high profile games, this doesn’t really push the Vita’s graphical power to it’s limits. Though it’s relatively awesome to use augmented reality cameras to immerse yourself into the world of Little Deviants, it really doesn’t offer much more than competing products from other companies.

The gameplay is really where this game hooks you in terms of Vita capabilities. Though I’m willing to admit that this game offers just a little more then what a free game on a competitor’s console will offer, what it does offer is down right addicting. You will be latching on to some of the minigames, than others as they either repeat themselves or function better than the others. For example, the game uses a lot of mini-games requiring you to use either the touch pads or the gyrosensors of the Vita to either kill enemies or to avoid them. Then there are games like the singing one, that require you use the mic, which only appears a few times. Don’t know if the developer at BigBig intentionally did that knowing the microphone on the Vita isn’t well traversed in picking up pitch, or if the game itself is too early in the Vita’s infancy that it can’t handle different pitches for singing, but overall the other games are worthwhile to play. The player though will experience boredom after large amounts of play if they don’t like beating their own or other players’ online score because this game suffers for being repetitive.

The music and sound are good and the story is non-existent. Yes there is a story to speak of, but doesn’t really add anything to the overall gameplay. Deviants, which are basically aliens in the shape of balls, are attacked by bots which end up destroying their ship and cause the Deviants crash onto earth. The environments that the player is offered to play in are also the center piece at least one play through. There are many levels to play in, which features great grasslands, ice mounts and other various landscapes. These are unlocked by completing each of the mini-games till one gets either a bronze, silver, or gold metal. This is what is at the core of what this game has to offer, is unlocking new areas, different Deviants, parts to the Deviant’s ship that they need to get back home and cats called Moggers (which are in game trophies essentially). This lack of story, and repetitive gameplay while still having it be addicting and rewarding is why I’ll give this game a 3.2 out of 5.
