Netflix Reimagines Marco Polo’s Travels This Winter

“Worlds will collide” this winter between East and West in Netflix’s ambitious take on the voyages of Marco Polo.

Starring Lorenzo Richelmy as the historical explorer, Marco Polo is directed by John Fusco (Young Guns, Hidalgo) and sees Polo during his earliest days in the court of the 13th century’s Kublai Khan, emperor of the Mongolian Empire. The series also stars Benedict Wong as Kublai Khan and Zhu Zhu as a princess of the court.

The series, originally developed by Starz in 2012, was picked up by Netflix for a $90 million, 10-episode first season after attempts to shoot the series in China failed. First announced in January earlier this year, the series filmed in Italy, Kazakhstan, and Pinewood Studios in Malaysia.

Netflix describes the series as follows:

Intrigue. Deception. Bloodshed. These are just some of the obstacles awaiting legendary explorer Marco Polo as he navigates the inner court of 13th century ruler, Kublai Khan. From the back alleys of Venice to the perilous Silk Road, from the opulence of the Imperial City to the battlefields of China, Marco Polo is an epic action-adventure, where cultures clash, blood is spilled, and lies are told…

Marco Polo joins a wealth of recently revealed series for streaming on-demand to Netflix, including 2015’s Daredevil and its original series “Bloodlines.” The streaming service’s Emmy award-winning House of Cards, returns February, 2015.
