Marvel Heroes Being Shut Down

Marvel Heroes

While I was never that into Marvel Heroes, it did tickle a very specific fancy for someone who likes Marvel’s roster of characters and enjoys mindlessly clicking through waves of enemies for loot. The Diablo-like was released on PC in 2013 and this year saw ports of it come to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Unfortunately, it looks like Disney has severed ties with the developer, Gazillion Entertainment, effectively putting the final notch in Marvel Heroes and spelling out an impending shut down of the games.

The news comes way of a Marvel representative who sent out an e-mail which announced that the game would be shutting down. Marvel also stated to expect updates about the situation as they become available. Kotaku talked to developers of the game and discovered that three rounds of lay-offs had occurred within a year of the game’s launch, and it isn’t surprising to hear that updates to the free-to-play game were consistently a source of crunch time as employees at Gazillion worked 80 hour weeks sometimes.

What’s most surprising is that the game was released on PS4 and Xbox One earlier this year and is being shut down in the same year. That’s a real bummer for those who put money into the game already, but it is a free-to-play title so the loss for those who didn’t spend money is just equal to their time spent. Of course, the community had signs that things weren’t looking good for Marvel HeroesThor: Ragnarok came out in theaters and you’d expect a game with Marvel characters to try and do a tie-in but no such event occurred, nor did any Halloween event which is a mainstay for any free-to-play game really.

Did you spend any time with Marvel Heroes and how do you feel about the game shutting down? Let us know in the comments below.
