Metal Gear Survive Announced, Will Exist in MGSV Universe

Metal Gear Survive Official Trailer - Gamescom 2016

It didn’t take too long for Konami to finally announce a Metal Gear game after the departure of series creator, Hideo Kojima, that isn’t a Pachinko machineMetal Gear Survive (which conveniently has the acronym “MGS”), is a four-player stealth game that has players working together to fight off zombies. The game will take place soon after the events of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. It is set to be released on PS4, Xbox One and PC in 2017.

The soldiers of the Militaires Sans Frontières that were not killed at the end of Ground Zeroes will be transported to another dimension by way of a wormhole. So yes, technically you are a time-travelling zombie killer. There is a dedicated Metal Gear Online community out there, so it isn’t too surprising to see Konami try to tackle a multiplayer off-shoot before possibly heading in the direction of new stories in the universe. The connection to the series seems fairly light, due to its alternate dimension angle. This is probably good news for the Metal Gear purists out there, but maybe it’s better to just rip the band-aid off quickly?

The game is set to offer a “fresh take” on the stealth that fans of the series have enjoyed, according to Konami’s European president, Tomotada Tashiro. No details were really given as to what that entails. The ending of the trailer above does heavily imply that a Metal Gear will also be present along with the zombie infestation. So there’s at least that for a tie-in.

Unfortunately, very little about this feels like a Metal Gear title. The trailer is pretty light on anything to pinpoint, but that’s also kind of the reason I’m extremely skeptical. Metal Gear trailers have always been stuffed with weirdness, and this only has two weird moments: zombies and wormholes. I will check out the game when it comes out, but Metal Gear Survive doesn’t currently have any hooks in me yet.
