Microsoft Announces Age Of Empires: Castle Siege

The next instalment in the Age of Empires franchise is probably not what fans were hoping for. Castle Siege has been designed as a touch based game where players must design bases and build up armies with which to attack other online players. If that sounds familiar to you then that’s because the game plays extremely similarly to Supercell’s smash hit Clash of Clans.

This news comes just days after Disney announced their own Clash of Clans knock off, Star Wars: Commander. As with all the other games attempting to ape Supercell’s successful formula, Castle Siege will be a free to play title with plenty of micro-transactions. The game offers the choice of six different civilizations all of which are from previous games in the franchise. The factions on offer are the Britons, Byzantines, Franks, Kievan Rus, Saracens and Teutonic Order. Microsoft is promising that Castle Siege will include ”all the strategy and combat Age of Empires is renowned for”. From what we’ve seen so far, that seems to be a lie.

Age of Empires: Castle Siege is being developed by Smoking Gun Interactive and will be released on Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 next month. You can check out the announcement trailer above.
