Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Stories 2 Announced

A double-helping of Capcom's popular hack-and-slash franchise

Monster Hunter Rise

Monster Hunter Rise has been announced at today’s Nintendo Partner Showcase. Monster Hunter has had a history of being on Nintendo consoles in the past, with several of its series entries being on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Even on Nintendo Switch, Monster Hunter has appeared recently as well, with Generations Ultimate. The upcoming title will be a Nintendo Switch exclusive, from the looks of it.

In addition to Monster Hunter Rise, a spin-off sequel was also announced, known as Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. Monster Hunter Stories 2’s main difference from the core series is that it’s a story-driven RPG. This differs greatly from the hack-and-slash action of the main series titles. Monster Hunter Stories 2 also looks to be a Nintendo Switch exclusive as well.

Along with the new game announcements, trailers for each have been released. You can watch both trailers below.

And for Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin:

What’s New To Each Title

Monster Hunter Rise looks to change up the current formula with how Monster Hunter World Iceborne (out now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC) currently plays, adding new mechanics on top of what World brought to the table. For instance, the game looks to be much more open-world than previous series entries and less linear than before. In addition, the Raider Ride feature introduced in Iceborne looks to be a standardized feature in Rise. Players also have access to a gadget known as the Wirebug, which grants the ability to swing across gaps without needing a grapple point. This is a departure from Wedge Beetles in World, and it allows for free-form traversal across the vast environments.

Monster Hunter Stories 2, on the other hand, has no gameplay revealed. The entire trailer is cinematics from the game’s story mode. What can be gathered is that you, as the player, are investigating what’s causing a mass migration of Rathalos from their natural habitats. Unfortunately, you can’t gather any gameplay elements, such as whether it’s an ARPG (like Final Fantasy XV) or a turn-based RPG (akin to Persona 4 Golden). We’ll update if more news surfaces about either title.

Monster Hunter Rise is releasing on March 27th, 2021, and Monster Hunter Stories 2 is releasing Summer 2021. Both titles are Nintendo Switch exclusive, and pre-orders for Monster Hunter Rise are available now.
