Nathan’s E3 Wishlist

E3 is right around the corner! Every year at this time thousands of fans gather at the convention center and millions more huddle around their television sets to soak up every bit of information that they can about upcoming games and systems. It seems that by the time the annual convention wraps up that the only thing that equals the fan’s excitement about what was announced is the fan’s disappointment in what wasn’t announced. We all have our own “want list’ when it comes to video game announcements so here are a few things that I hope to see at this year’s show:

I want some Deadly Premonition news. This should come as no surprise to anyone who knows me or has read any of my stuff. Deadly Premonition is my favorite game of all time and the wait for more has been increasingly difficult as the months drag on. There has been rumor of a sequel since the original released on Xbox 360 a few years ago but I’m waiting on pins and needles for some more concrete info. It doesn’t have to be a sequel announced though. Back in March of this year there was an announcement made of a “Director’s Cut” version coming to PS3. This would be enough for me as long as we got some definite details or even a release date. Come on Swery; give us what you know we want!

I want the Wii U to make some sense. Am I the only one who could only scratch their heads after Nintendo’s Wii U announcement at E3 last year? I was never a fan of the Wii but Nintendo has a long history of quality so anytime they are revealing hardware, the world watches. The reveal of the Wii U, however, was one of the more confusing reveals I’ve ever witnessed. They sure showed a lot of people having some fun with some sort of video game device but just exactly what they were holding or what it did didn’t really make sense to a lot of people. After the video was over I remember thinking that the Wii U must be a new controller for the regular Wii, only with a screen in it. Apparently I was wrong but to this day I’m still not sure what the Wii U is all about so I do hope that this year’s E3 sheds some light on it.

I want more details on Aliens: Colonial Marines. I am not typically a big fan of first person shooters but there’s something about this game that intrigues me. The Alien movies are some pretty fantastic examples of sci-fi horror and in the right hands I think that this game could be terror-ific! (That’s right, I said it, baby!) This game happens to be in the right hands, by the way. Gearbox Software are the guys who brought us Borderlands and if you played that game then you know these guys know their first person shooters. (Let’s just forget Duke Nukem Forever) The story of the game is a direct sequel to the James Cameron directed ‘Aliens’ which makes the game all the more interesting to me. Right now Aliens: Colonial Marines is slated for a February 2013 release but hopefully we’ll get some more datails like some gameplay or the announcement of a demo for what is quickly becoming one of my most anticipated games of the year.

I want news on a new Ninja Turtles game. This is the total fanboy coming out in me but I don’t care. I have a deep seeded love for all things TMNT and I know that a new Turtles game is on the way, I just need some solid details to get excited about. With a new cartoon coming to the Nickelodeon network and a live action movie in the making for Christmas 2013, the Turtles are still a hot commodity. There were rumors of developers Rocksteady (of Batman: Arkham City fame) working on a more mature TMNT game and there was some photographic evidence of Activision being involved in a game based on the new cartoon. To be honest, I really don’t care who is involved in the game, I just want to play it. I would love to play a Rocksteady developed Turtles game but if that doesn’t happen I will play whatever they give me. Not all of the Turtles games have been great in the past but I think that my blinding obsession for them helps me look past the imperfections and enjoy the games anyway. There has been no official announcement of a new Turtles game made by anyone yet, but I think this year’s E3 would be a fantastic place to start. (please?)

I want some scary games to look forward to. Most of the horror games as of late have veered more towards the “action” side of things. While this action/horror hybrid can still breed entertaining games, i.e. Dead Space 2, it can also cause a series to lose much of its luster, i.e. Resident Evil 5. There have been some releases lately that adhere to the old school survival horror trappings like Amnesia and Silent Hill: Downpour but I would like to see some more. A little more light being shed on Guillermo Del Toro’s inSane would be great. Maybe a little more from the Fatal Frame series? How about another entry into Sega’s terrifying Condemned series? Whatever it is; I want something to be scared of in video games over the next few years and there’s no better time than E3 to start getting excited about it… and to buy new underwear.

There you have it, folks! Just a few of the things that I will be on the lookout for at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo. I’m sure some of these wishes will not be fulfilled but I’m pretty hopeful about some of them. The unpredictability of it all is what makes E3 so awesome though. You never know what you’re going to find out about and there are never any shortage of returning favorites and promising new IP’s. If it’s all the same to you though, E3, I really would like a new Ninja Turtles game.
