Need for Speed Payback Story Trailer Doubles Down on Gambling Wordplay

Ever since it was announced, I have said that EA’s next entry in the Need for Speed franchise – Need for Speed Payback – is quite clearly trying to ride high on the success of the Fast and Furious series of films. The new story trailer that has been released only emboldens that notion with silly dialogue, a “family” of racers, and the whole world against them. Think Fast Five, but interactive. You can check out the trailer below to get a glimpse of the plot in motion.

Allied through a mutual hatred for The House, Tyler, Mac, and Jess team up to earn the respect of Fortune Valley’s underground race scene and earn a chance to compete in the Rush. The story definitely looks cinematic, and E3 2017 showcased some gameplay that hints at a much more cinematic gameplay experience. I personally think Ghost Games are on the verge of making something awesome with the Need for Speed franchise, but they seem to keep missing the mark. With a move like the one they’re making in terms of story, it’s clear that Ghost Games knows that Need for Speed Payback can make an impact if the story is told right. The franchise has had a long run of attempting to do memorable stories, but the closest they’ve ever really come is with 2005’s Need for Speed: Most Wanted and even that is due to memorable characters more than the plot.

Payback looks great though, and I love the feeling that people were just out to make a fun story. Sure, this trailer opens with Tyler’s house exploding (presumably that’s his house), but everything else we’ve seen seems like an attempt at an entertaining popcorn film, and there’s no better franchise suited for that than Need for Speed. We’ll just have to wait until Need for Speed Payback releases on November 10th, 2017 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Are you excited for Payback? Let us know in the comments below your thoughts on the game and the trailer!

Source: YouTube
